Day 347- How Long Does Food Last In Your Fridge?

Do you have a hard time figuring out if certain items in your fridge are still good? Below is a helpful cheat sheet that you can use as a general rule of thumb when it comes to your refridgerator. A new study out of Canada says that 70-80% of food-borne illness is caused by final preparation and handling of food—i.e. in your own kitchen.

Day 345- Top Ramen Was Created to Survive Armageddon, A Shocking Video

We all know processed foods are bad for you, but now we can see a video of how our bodies actually handle processed foods (which isn't very well). Stefani Bardin shows us what happens in our bodies when we eat processed foods verse homemade versions of similar foods, by using a tiny LED/camera capsule called the "M2A," which stands for Mouth to Anus. The video looks at two subjects that are eating two similar meals. One subject eats a meal composed of processed foods; top ramen, gatorade, and gummi bears. The second subject eats a similar meal, but of the homemade variety; homemade broth with noodles, a hibiscus drink, and gummi bears made of juice. The video is called TEDxManhattan, and you will soon see why some foods are meant to be eaten, while others are meant to survive forever.

Day 258- What Does It Take to be a Victoria Secret's Model?

Bliss Tree wrote an article that highlighted Victoria Secret's supermodel Adriana Lima's interview on what it takes to prepare for the yearly fashion show. I thought it was extreme enough to share with everyone, so below is the featured article:

"Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima says being a Victoria’s Secret Angel is the “highlight of my life” (maybe she forgot that she is married and has a 2-year-old daughter?). Nevertheless, the 30-year-old has opened up about what it really takes to look runway ready for the largest fashion show in the world where scantly-dressed models show off Victoria’s Secrets latest lingerie–and believe us, her exercise routine may be acceptable, but her diet is shocking.

Lima recently told the telegraph that she has been working out every day with a personal trainer since August, and twice a day for the last three weeks.

It is really intense, it’s not really the amount of time you spend working out, it’s the intensity: I jump rope, I do boxing, I lift weights, but I get bored doing that. If I am not moving I get bored very easily.

That’s all fine. But then the Telegraph goes on to describe her diet:

She sees a nutritionist, who has measured her body’s muscle mass, fat ratio and levels of water retention. He prescribes protein shakes, vitamins and supplements to keep Lima’s energy levels up during this training period. Lima drinks a gallon of water a day. For nine days before the show she will drink only protein shakes – “no solids”. The concoctions include powdered egg.

What? No solid foods during this so-called “training period”? What exactly is she “training” for? Last I checked, models were not athletes in training.

And as if that’s not bad enough, here’s the kicker: Twelve hours before the show she will stop drinking entirely.

“No liquids at all so you dry out, sometimes you can lose up to eight pounds just from that,” Lima said.

Ugh. Yes, let’s stop drinking water–the substance that our bodies need the most–just so we can walk down a runway all dried out."

Day 207- Make Your Own Sunscreen

I know that today is the first day of Fall, and with that time to begin the season of scarves, hot apple cider, UGGs, and all that comes with a chillier season. Today's blog features a video on how to make your own sunscreen from home, without the toxins, and chemicals that you get when you buy the majority of sunscreens at the store. So even though the temperature is dropping, that doesn't mean you can forget about protecting your skin from the harsh UV rays.

If you didn't have a chance to read my blog on the dangers of sunscreen, you can check it out here.

Day 168- Detoxing Yoga Poses

This week on Bliss Tree they are launching their "Ultimate Yoga" series, with the focus of this week being on detox. These yoga poses focus on the internal organs, especially the kidney and liver, helping the body to release toxins, and increasing blood flow.

Although I may need more than just a few yoga poses to help me recover from my vacation, at least it is a start.

Check out Bliss Tree's video on detoxing yoga poses:
