Day 250- Parabens

Parabens are found in foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and personal care products. They are synthetic preservatives that help a product have a longer shelf life; helping to prevent bacteria, yeast and mold to grow. The most common parabens that you will see listed in products like deodorant, lotions, and shampoos include methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. The problem that arises with parabens is that they mimic hormones in the body and can cause havoc on the endocrine system. Parabens have been linked to cancer, increased skin aging, early puberty, and an array of other sexual dysfunctions.

We most likely are all aware that many of our products contain parabens, but many of us have not given this a second thought. Now we see the label, "paraben free" on products all the time. So maybe it is time to think about what we are rubbing into our skin. There are many great products out there that are paraben free, all you have to do is look. Below I have provided just a few products that I have found to be paraben free.

Shaving Cream:
  • EOS
  • Burt's Bees
  • Alba
Lotions:
  • Origins
  • Korres
  • Coconut oil
  • Kiss My Face
  • Nature's Gate
Shampoos and Conditioners:
  • Avalon
  • Burt's Bees
  • Jason
  • Kiss My Face
  • Naked Naturals
These are just a few examples of some of the paraben free products that are out there. If you would like to learn more about how safe your cosmetics are, visit Skin Deep.
