185- How Do You Respond When Someone Gives You a Compliment?

Why is it that when women are given a compliment they have to downgrade it with everything that is wrong with them instead. If we where to congratulate a woman on an accomplishment or on her career, she would more likely take the compliment by saying, "thank you." Yet when we are to receive a complement on our physical appearance it seems wrong to accept it. If I was to compliment a woman on her figure, it would be likely that I would get a list of all the issues that are wrong with her figure; hips to big, breasts to small, too much cellulite, etc.

As women we have been programmed to find everything that is wrong with our appearance. Why is this? But as uncomfortable as we are accepting a compliment we are also uncomfortable with other women accepting one as well. If I was to compliment a women on something regarding her figure and she responded "thank you, I'm really happy with the way I look right now as well" we would think that she was arrogant and full of herself. As women we need to learn how to accept compliments and love everything that makes us, "us."

Below is an interview from the Today show with Health writer, Leslie Goldman and developmental psychologist and author of the book, "Good Girls Don't Get Fat," Dr. Robyn Silverman. To read more about this interview and the theory that women have inner body bullies, check out the article here.
